Big companies go to big agencies, and have big budgets, I used to work for a top agency in London.

A typical project at the last agency I worked for was in the $50,000 – $100,000 range for consultation/design/information structure/build/management and marketing. For this, the client got a team of consultants, designers, project manager, project director, developers, css experts and SEO consultants. Thats why large companies have slick sites.

I actually got sick of seeing $100,000 sites that could have be done for $10,000 without compromising on quality, so have gone freelance to bring my expertise to smaller customers, however I compete with a lot of self taught amateurs who pretend they are pros.

Poke around among the freelancers and you may find somebody who meets your needs among the piles of shoddy work, but be careful, a slick looking site can hide technical incompetence! Good luck!

One way is to look at elance.com and guru.com to find a local developer.

It is kind of all old tech, but YellowPage still work

well there are the web designers like and others like them who can actually meet up with you to discuss the website.
I know that some freelancers want everything already in their hands, and then they can just drag and drop!

Try the smaller web design companies, they need portfolios, as much as you need a website.
